mock fillet mignon

so, my mother used to make this sometimes growing up. it wasn't very often because we wouldn't really eat anything that didn't involve vivid color and excellent nutrition, but when she did branch out and make us something like this - she did it well. in the words of my dad, "she can make a turd delicious." welcome to my childhood. i called her to ask for the recipe today and she responded with, "oh, whit. it's just fancy burger meat."

anyway - recipe.

INGREDIENTS
1 lb ground round
1 egg, beaten
salt and pepper to taste
1/2 tablespoon garlic powder
1/2 tablespoon onion powder
1 teaspoon of paprika
2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
slices of bacon, raw
toothpicks

DIRECTIONS

mix all ingredients, sans bacon, in a big bowl. mush and gush the hell out of that ground cow carcass until everything is thoroughly mixed.

form mixed goo into balls and flatten into patties that are about one inch thick. take a slice of bacon and wrap around the edge of the patty. secure with a couple of tooth picks.

turn your oven on broil. since the meat is so thick, put the pan on the lower rack. trust me, i've burnt the shit out of the outside and almost yacked when it was raw in the middle.

cook on broil for 15 minutes.
flip those babies over and cook for 15 minutes on the other side.

while that is cooking, check out the most important thing in my kitchen. the steamer. oh, ive raved about this before? yeah, that's how awesome it is.

i added some lemon pepper seasonings in the seasoning screened thingie ma jigger.

i threw some frozen artichoke halves into the divider guy and some mixed vegetables in the main part.

yes, it was in the back of the freezer. how could you tell? what! it has asparagus and shit in it. nick doesnt eat that. whatever, it was extra juicy.

anyway, steam that while the other side of the "fancy burger meat" is cooking.

viola! it tasted great! i put it on top of some mashed potatoes because i ordered fillet mignon one time and they did it. and dont think i'm fancy and made it from scratch. no. its the tub of country crock kind you get in the butter section. how healthy does THAT sound? mom would flip. anyway, fancy burger meat was great and my belly is full.
